In January, the Jewish Community Foundation of New Mexico (JCFNM) named Sarah Winger as the new Executive Director, assuming the role in March after the retirement of founding Executive Director, Erika Rimson.
Sarah joins the JCFNM from UNM Hospital where she was the Director of CareLink Services, a behavioral health program, and where she oversaw the Adult and Pediatric CareLink Teams, multiple state grants, and numerous Psychiatric Center initiatives. Sarah has a long history with the JCFNM, having served on the Foundation Board for five years and chairing the Grants Committee. She has also served on the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society Board and has been an active member of the broader New Mexico Jewish community for many years.
“I am so honored and incredibly excited to be stepping into the Executive Director role at the Jewish Community Foundation of New Mexico,” Sarah shares. “I look forward to building on Erika’s accomplishments, and working with our donors, community leaders and nonprofit partners to address the changing and critical needs within the Jewish community today and for generations to come.”
For over ten years, the JCFNM has worked with individuals and families to invest in philanthropic causes around the state and country – and has established endowment programs with synagogues and organizations to create permanent funding sources to support their missions.
As the Foundation has grown, it has built various grant programs to help increase opportunities for immigrants and refugees, support New Mexico Jewish women and children, reduce antisemitism, and maintain and enhance Jewish life in New Mexico. Scholarships have also been established to help support youth attending Jewish summer camps and to recognize outstanding high school students who have championed human rights and human dignity.
With this growth, the Foundation’s Board committed to hiring its first full-time Executive Director, understanding that the opportunities to support the New Mexico Jewish community were expanding and the possibilities for developing new community-based collaborations were critical in building a thriving and enduring Jewish community within the state.
“Today, the Jewish Community Foundation of New Mexico is engaging with more donors than ever and is thinking creatively about how to partner with our fund holders to meet the most pressing needs in our community,” says Dan Newman, the Foundation’s Board Chair. “Sarah’s multidisciplinary professional background, strong ties to the local Jewish community and relationships with many nonprofits and donors made her an exceptional candidate to further build upon the Foundation’s success that began under Erika’s leadership.”
